Standard – In the interest of public safety, environmental protection and technician competency, volunteer experts in a field periodically write recommendations to build, install, operate, maintain and certify equipment and systems.

Code – When a government authority adopts a standard, it becomes a legally enforceable rule.

Regulation – Rule made by an authority.
